Serres

The city of Serres is cited since the 12 th B.C. century by Herodotus with the name “Siris the Paeonic”, although various findings date the existence of the city even earlier. This town is not particularly known during the ancient times and the Roman occupancy, however, during the Byzantine times this town is cited as a “big and magnificent town”, large, powerful and rich. In 1204 A.C. it was occupied by the Franks, till 1230, when it was conquered by the Bulgarians. In 1245 the town was re-possessed by Byzantium under the rule of the Paleologus family, whereas from 1383 till 1913 Serres was under the yoke of the Turks. On the 28 th of June 1913 the town was savagely set to fire by the Bulgarians and on the 29 th of June 1913 Serres was liberated by the Greek Army.

The population of the city is approximately 100.000 inhabitants, including the students. The Technical Educational Institute (T.E.I.) of Serres has more than 10.000 students, with increasing tendencies. It is the second, in population, town of Macedonia after Thessaloniki . Serres is known for its vivid night life, its delicious dishes and its very friendly inhabitants.
