In terms of pysiognomy and ecological characteristics, the flora in the region can be divided up into types of thermophilous continental dessiduous oak.The flora in the Serres region can be divided into:1. Ubiquitous plant species: turf, bushes, and woody plants.2. Species (mostly trees) which are grown by man;3. Species which grow naturally (in semi-mountainous and mountainous regions).

 

 

THE FAUNA
IN THE SERRES AREA

 

The forests, the meadows, the gullies, the expanses of cultivated land, and the inhabited areas provide suitable habitat for a large number of species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish.Many of the birds in the region are protected species. A quarter of them are included under Article 1 of the European directive 79/409 which concerns "the preservation of birds in the wild". What's more, 36% of the species fall into SPEC 1, SPEC 2, or SPEC 3 categories. Eighteen species to be found in the Serres region are included in the "Red Book", in which all the threatened species of birds in Greece are listed, while 98% of all birds are covered by Law 13335/83, as laid down by the Treaty of Berne, which aims to protect wild creatures and their habitat. Finally, 38% of the species are covered by the provisions of the Treaty of Bonn concerning the protection of migratory species. The most important mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish that live and breed in the ecosystems surrounding the city of Serres are as follows:
