SPORT
That the Municipality of Serres concerns itself with the interests of its sporty citizens is obvious from the cutting-edge sporting facilities that have been built, as well as from the improvements which have been made to existing sports grounds and the extensive renovation of any of its sports facilities which were considered to be "past their sell by date".
The sports centre in the Agion Anargyron valley includes the heated 25m National swimming pool, an indoor basketball court, as well as outdoor tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. Local sports clubs make full use of these sports facilities, set as they are in an area of exceptional natural beauty, and the citizens of Serres naturally gravitate here to take some exercise.
Some 8 kilometres north of the city, the infrastructure of the Chrysopigi Sports Centre is in its final stages of construction. Once completed, the Public Sports Centre will cover a total of 9,000 square metres and will include an 85-bed hotel, a restaurant, a sports hall with room for 500 spectators, a cafeteria, and a shop selling sports equipment.
The new centre will be an ideal venue for major sporting events, and will offer the following ultra-modern sports facilities: a football pitch, basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, an indoor gym, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
In addition, there are two sports grounds within the Municipality of Serres: Firstly, there is the Municipal Ground, with space for 10,000 spectators, which has been home to the Panserraikos football team since it was formed by the merger of two smaller teams - Herakles and Apollo - in 1964. The stadium is also used by the Plato and Kronos weightlifting clubs, and by the Orpheas wrestling team. Secondly, there is the National Stadium, which has space for 5,000 spectators, and is the home ground of both the Pamvlachiakos and Pontioi Serron football clubs. The stadium is also equipped for track and field meetings, and is home to the Theseus wrestling club.

Motor sports are catered for at the Municipal Race Track, which has been open to the south west of the city since 1998. Built in accordance with specifications laid down by the International Federation (FIA), its 3,186 metres of track host Formula 3 and motorcycle races. The track boasts the following auxiliary facilities: (a) fully-equipped pits, which cater for the needs of competitors and their back-up teams, as well as buildings to house spectators, the track management, a competitions secretariat, and a press office;
(b) a 4,900 square metre parking lot for competitors; and (c) the auxiliary road network, nine areas where spectators can park, and the stand with a maximum capacity of 10,000 spectators. The Serres race track and the Omonoia public sports facilities, which include football pitches; basketball, volleyball and tennis courts; an indoor gym and a go-cart track, bear testament to the drive fuelling development in the city of Serres.
