“THE<\/span> BICYCLE<\/span> IN<\/span> SERES<\/span> FROM<\/span> THE BEGINNING<\/span> OF THE 20TH<\/span> CENTURY<\/span> (1900<\/span>) UNTIL<\/span> TODAY<\/span> (2013<\/span>)”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This study surveys the appearance of bicycles, their usage, and cycling, in general, in Serres, from 1900 through 2013. The survey starts from the latest days of the Ottoman occupation, at the beginning of the twentieth century. It was then when the first bicycles appeared in the town, just some years before Serres was liberated from the Turkish yoke, early in the previous century. Particularly, there are records, coming from the first sports clubs of the time, which regard and mention cycling as a sport, and also inform us about the general usage of bicycles at that time and since then. That is, as a means of transportation used by either individual citizens or by some public services, later on. This study surveys the cyclist\u2019s \u2018\u2019status quo\u2019\u2019 in the social background of the town all these years. It also monitors cycling as a mass movement, as it has been evolved, lately, in the la st decade. There is rich photographic material that regards both sport and recreational cycling. There are also photographs concerning the general use of bicycle in Serres, and references that have to do with the latest infrastructure of the town, as well. Since the bibliography, on this particular topic, is rather poor, all kinds of information and the photographs came from research from a wide range of sources (i.e. books, sports clubs, from the Hellenic Cycling Federation, the Municipality of Serres, from various Public Services, interviews etc). Consequently, it is quite evident from the above, that cycling in Serres has a presence of more than a century, and it has partially contributed to the development of the town, in its own way, along with all kinds of changes that took place in the infrastructure and local life, all in all, in Serres through time. Furthermore, due to a variety of reasons, it is considered highly likely that cycling in Serres will flourish further in the years to come.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
