Serres:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n A public sculpture monument of the middle war\u00bb<\/strong><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n In remembrance of the soldiers and officers of the legendary Division of Serres, who died in the battlefields and fought for the liberation of the tortured Macedonian land, a public monument was erected after 1913 outdoors, close to the Railway Station of the town. <\/span><\/p>\n The first obelisk-shaped monument, which ended in a shell of a cannon at its top, and was a work made exclusively by military forces, had a temporary character. It had been raised since 1919, dedicated to the immortal dead in the battlefields of the First World War (1916-1919). Then, it was replaced with the beautiful permanent marble sculpture by the famous artist George Dimitriadis of Athens (1880-1941). He took over its artistic creation after a competition, which was carried out in 1919 by the Division of Serres. The \u201ccontracting\u201d contract, which was signed in 1920 between the sculptor and the Commander of the Division of Serres, Epaminondas Zymvrakakis and is now included in the collection of the General State Archives – Files of Serres together with the preliminary draft, defines the standards of the artistic work and its delivery time.<\/span><\/p>\n Its completion delayed, as it was transferred from the capital to Serres just in 1929 and it was inaugurated with great pomp in June 1930. It is a conspicuous quadrilateral votive sculpture, imitating a small ancient Greek temple with Doric columns and a huge helmet with a crest at its top. Its adjoining vertical sides are decorated with a relief, presenting the victorious attack of an armed military team, where human figures mingled with horses and their heavy armor in a figurative and realistic way.<\/span><\/p>\n This excellent work of art blew up in 1941-43 by the Bulgarian occupation\u2019s forces in their attempt to eliminate the reminder of the past, since their defeat and their rout were depicted.<\/span><\/p>\n In 1959, after a Royal Decree, a Fund Raising Committee was created, having as a purpose its restoration. The efforts of the Committee paid off in 1971.
