all the historical periods of the Greeks. The town overlooks the valley of the river Strymon. Center of the valley was for millennia the lake Kerkinitis. The lake was the main driver of growth in the region. The early 1930&#8217;s the lake, dried and delivered as arable land to residents. The presentation will attempt to answer the questions regarding the role of the lake for the development of the region, exploring the geographical situation before the desiccation and the consequences afterwards. The study focused on the period around the year 1920 (year of the drainage works). The approach tries to reconstruct the region on a large scale through the population and the economic geography, the urban identity and finally the planning policies in this period.The text after doing a brief review of the historical geography of the area, will consider successively the period before and after drying.
