\u00ab<\/span><\/strong><\/span>International Organizations and Public Health in the Prefecture of Serres during the inter-war period<\/span>\u00bb<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The attempts of the interwar governments to deal with public health problems at the time they were implementing policies aiming at the rehabilitation of refugees, at the reconstruction of the socio-economic infrastructure and at the modernization of the devastated by the wars provinces of Eastern Macedonia, is a topic that has not been thoroughly researched. This contribution constitutes a case study of the prefecture of Serres addressing the following issues: the public health problems brought about by forced population movements following the Asia Minor Disaster, the influx of refugees and the spread of transmissible diseases. The contribution of the international health organisations\u2019 intervention initially on counteracting health problems set off by the humanitarian crisis, and after 1928, on planning and carrying out a public health policy which would take into consideration the socio-economic factors and would follow common patterns of international health administration and practices. The health experts of the League of Nations Health Organisation, who were invited by the Venizelos\u2019 government and carried out research of the health conditions and problems both in the city and the countryside of Serres, combined forces with the Health Organization of the Rockefeller Foundation and disseminated new scientific ideas and practices pertaining to public health, which had been developed by the international organisations, and employed new methods and patterns of social hygiene and public health. <\/span><\/p>\n
