font-size: 10pt;\"><b>The representation of the hut in the Sarakatsanian Folk Museum in Serres and its affinity with the origins of architectural vocabulary.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times; font-size: 10pt;\">A folk museum, especially if it is local, feeds the collective memory and social coherence as a space of historical representation and cultural production. It functions as an \u201copen\u201d cultural unit contributing to the understanding and experience of the local civilization through the projection of its identity. The identity and civilization of a particular locality is the very people inhabiting it. In the case of the city of Serres and its vicinity, the inhabitants are mainly native Greeks, immigrants from Minor Asia and Eastern Thrace, as well as minorities of a specific group such as the Sarakatsanoi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times; font-size: 10pt;\">The Sarakatsanoi, untill the beginning of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, were mainly Greek stock breeders seasonally migrating all over the southern Balkans and especially in the wider area of Serres. The dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the Greek national borders, as well as the transformations of the Greek society as a result of the two world wars, led the Sarakatsanoi to settle down as urban dwellers rather than nomads, following various professions. Today, the material evidence of their history, their tradition and their art, is kept in the city of Serres by the Association of Sarakatsanoi \u201cKatsantonis\u201d and the Folk Museum of Sarakatsanoi in Serres, awarded a honorary mention in 1987 by the Council of Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman,times; font-size: 10pt;\">On the ground level of the museum, the visitor can see a series of reconstructions of the traditional hut which was the main habitat of the sarakatsanoi nomads. Our interest is focused on these structures as they remarkably resemble the representations of the primitive hut, man\u2019s primordial habitat and origin of Architecture, as it was illustrated and expressed mainly in the form of engravings by the scholars, architects and artists of the Enlightenment, notably Laugier, Perrault, Viollet-le-Duc, Chambers and others, as well as Greek and foreign folklorists.
