T<\/b>he significant number of monuments and archaeological sites, scattered to the urban landscape of Serres, dated to the byzantine, ottoman and modern period, combined to the survival of residential complexes that preserve their traditional morphology and city planning originating to the Interwar period, have made the city an inexhaustible field of research. <\/span><\/p>\n

All these characteristics, witnesses of the city\u2019s long history and urban space, coexist fragmentarily as parts of an environment that expands and transforms without taking them into consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n

In search of the physiognomy of the modern city of Serres, occasionally have been proposed and performed various studies and design projects whose main goal was always to highlight the multiplicity and complexity of the historical levels of the city while connecting the monuments of the past to the city\u2019s present. However, the majority of these projects has a limited an restricted character that concerns certain planning details without being parts of a long term planning framework and total (re) design.<\/span><\/p>\n

This article, part of a master\u2019s thesis, attempts to identify,<\/a>[1] analyze and complete, as possible, the historic urban tissue of the city of Serres, using modern planning tools, methods and teaching aids. The studied part of the city includes the entire historic center (urban plans of 1920 and 1925), the hill of the Byzantine citadel and the settlements called Imaret and Kamenikia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aim of the study2 is to collect all those elements necessary to obtain a complete and realistic picture of the current situation, which will allow large-scale motion interventions prioritize the protection and enhancement of monuments, residential complexes, urban alignments and natural elements, while respecting their history and uniqueness. <\/span><\/p>\n

A key challenge is also, the proposed interventions to be in agreement with the modern legislative framework and international conventions corresponding to present needs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
