architects Mitsakis, Leggeris and Georgakopoulos for the town\u2019s new school buildings\u00bb<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n After the liberation of Serres on 29th June 1913, a new era begins for the town: the wounds from the devastating fire are healed and the imperative housing and educational needs of the numerous refugee populations, who settled in the region after the catastrophe in Asia Minor, are treated.<\/span><\/p>\n In this context and with the possibilities offered by the 1920\u2019s legislation for the construction and repair of school buildings in the \u201cNew Lands\u201d, the first new school buildings start to be built in town. These are the 1st High School for Boys (1926-1929), as well as the six-year Primary School for Boys and Girls (7th Primary School since 1929, current 1st Primary School, 1929-1930) in the settlement Kiouplia. The funding, under the ambitious program of Eleftherios Venizelos\u2019 government (1928-1932) for the construction of school buildings across the country, leads to the realization of architectural projects prepared by Pericles Georgakopoulos, architect in the Ministry of Education, for two elementary schools in the districts of Anatoli and Evangelismos (now 2nd and 12th Primary Schools respectively).<\/span><\/p>\n Efforts for creating other school buildings in town culminate in 1940 with the projects of the architect Nikos Mitsakis (1899-1941), who is at the helm of the newly created Architectural Department in the Ministry of Education in 1930 and for almost the entire duration of this decade. These are the 1st Primary School on the site of the historic school building \u201cTsalopouleio\u201d (current 23rd Primary School), the 5th Primary School on Aghias Sofias street and the 6th Primary School. In parallel with these projects, the same architect designs the Girls’ High School on the site of today’s IKA square. The outbreak of the Greek-Italian War aborts the construction of the four school buildings and in 1948 Spiros Leggeris (1902-1976), architect in the Ministry of Education, adjusts the recent project of Mitsakis in order for it to be implemented according to the new needs.
