Nowadays in Greece, the interest in ottoman monuments is increasingly growing. A big number of such buildings are examined, studied and restored, as the possibility -through reuse- of their multicultural character and their role in the urban and general environment has long been realized.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ottoman conquest of Serres, despite the suffering that caused to the residents, was in fact a milestone for the city’s development, both urban as well as commercial. The Ottomans left at Serres their distinctive architectural \u201cimprint\u201d, radically changing the city\u2019s physiognomy. However, after the arson of 1913 and the city\u2019s liberation, Serres has retained a few examples of its glorious ottoman past. This announcement aims, after a brief historical overview, to present the main existing ottoman monuments, most of which are rare examples -almost unique in the Greek area- but are also some of the oldest Islamic architectural monuments in Europe. Through the historical and architectural analysis of them, we attempt their \u201crescuing\u201d recording, which could eventually form the basis of their evolvement. <\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, we present the “evolution” of these historical buildings from the liberation of the city to nowadays. More specifically, we will refer to the various uses of these buildings from 1913 until today, as well as the alterations that might have occurred at their building structure, architectural typology and morphology, caused by time or human activity. The interventions that have been made to them would be also presented, as well as any operation for their preservation and restoration, ending up at the actual state in which these buildings are today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, our goal is to formulate a guideline for the conservation and projection of these Ottoman monuments through their enhancement, reuse and integration in the urban site and in the city\u2019s activities.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
